Stare Off

Stare Off
28 in. x 20in.
India Ink

I never really imagined drawing anything that is tenebrous or death related, but here it is. The artwork was a drawing where I practiced the human anatomy, and I also developed the use of loose lines to give a suggestion of movement on the rib cage of the left hand skeleton.

Shells and Sand Dollar

Watercolor and Glitter Ink

This is part of the series I mentioned earlier. The main focus I on this piece is the sand dollar, and the text means sand dollar in different languages.

The Body of Nature

The Body of Nature
20x 16in.
Charcoal and Graphite

This artwork is based on Rebecca Ladds, and artist who combined anatomy with objects in nature. In this artwork, I decided to replace one side of the rib cage with a beehive. I thought that the shape sort of resembled a lung, so I did that. The idea of making the pelvis part of the lion's head came from psychology. There is this blot ink test that is not meant to resemble anything, but it can mean different things to different people according to their personality. There is a slide in particular that resembled an elephant's head, a pelvis, and/or a lion's head.

The Story of a Starfish

Mixed Media

The Story of Starfish was a part of a series based on objects found in the sea. In this one in particular, I decided to write a story about it in Spanish. The materials I used were watercolor, calligraphy ink, and medium with glass beads. Due to the low resolution and bad quality of the picture, you can't see the glass beads (sorry). Just imagine that there is a glitter-like substance on the starfish and use of brighter colors.

Mix of Miscellaneous

Oil Pastel

This was one of the first drawings I made with oil pastel, and personally it is one of my favorite artworks I have made so far. This is a still life composed of random objects like a mask, an empty can of tomatoes, and a fake fish. I personalized the drawing through my color choices. I like using bright colors such as pink, red, yellow, and blue.

A Day at the Creek

Oil Pastel

This drawing was made during the summer of last year. I created the reflection on the water by smearing the oil pastel as much as possible without completely distorting the object it reflected.

A Christmas Dinner Party

24 in. x 18 in.
Oil Pastel

This is a strata piece I was assigned to do as a project about a year ago. We were asked to make different layers of different objects and to follow a color scheme. I chose analogous colors such as red, yellow, and orange to create a feeling of warmth. The blue was used as both a contrast to the colors and as an indicative of the time of year it was made, which was December.

A Dancer's Grace

A Dancer's Grace
20 in. x 16in.
Mixed Media

This artwork was made using acrylic paint on the background along with a mix of unusual materials such as dragon fruit juice (yes, it's weird). I just went crazy with the background as I painted it with my hands. Basically I smeared paint all over in a way that would show movement and chaos. My goal was to create a conflict of colors. The figure was first drawn on paper, and then I transferred the image using carbon paper. I decided to repeat the figure so the viewer's focus wouldn't just be the one figure in the center.

Alice in Wonderland

Cut Paper

This is a commemorative piece I made not so long ago. It was sometime around November.
Basically I took some elements of what characterizes Alice in Wonderland such as the white rabbit, the plates representing the tea party, the Cheshire cat, and the red roses, and tried to place them in an interesting way.

Summer Collage

Color Pencil

This drawing was made during my summer break when I was trying to clean my room. I basically piled up random things and ripped unwanted college mail to create this busy looking composition.

Hello!

Hello, my name is Liliana Mata and I just want to give a brief introduction about myself. I am a high school senior at Booker T. Washington HSPVA. I am a Gemini, and I like animals, art, music, and just being creative. Soon I will be posting some artwork that I have made, and I hope you all will comment or possibly critique it. I am very excited that I am reaching more people through this way and I hope you all will keep tuned.
